Why I'm Smarter Than a Fitness Influencer

As someone who has dedicated their career to being an inclusive movement coach, I see firsthand the impact of unqualified fitness advice. I specialize in functional strength conditioning with a focus on fat positivity and inclusive fitness. My journey has been deeply personal—I have lived with ADHD, depressive disorder, anxiety, and recovered from an eating disorder. These experiences have given me a profound understanding of the importance of proper guidance in fitness.

I've encountered numerous clients who have been misled by influencers, resulting in physical and emotional setbacks. This is particularly troubling for those from underrepresented communities—such as the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, differently abled individuals, people of color, the fat community, and older adults—who already face significant barriers in accessing safe and inclusive fitness spaces.

I created 'My Joyous Adaptive Momentous Movement' (MyJAMM) and 'Joyful Inclusive Movement' to provide trauma-informed, safe, and effective spaces for movement. My mission is to help individuals heal their relationship with movement and build body trust. Through personalized coaching, I aim to show the joy that comes from moving your body and celebrate the uniqueness of every individual.

The Rise of Fitness Influencers

Fitness influencers often amass large followings by showcasing their personal fitness journeys, sharing workout routines, and promoting various products. While some influencers do have genuine knowledge and provide valuable content, many lack the formal education and credentials required to ensure the information they disseminate is accurate and safe.

The allure of their seemingly perfect physiques and lifestyles can be captivating, but it's essential to question the validity of their advice. Following the wrong guidance can lead to improper training techniques, injuries, and even long-term harm.

Why Choose Me: Credentials Matter

  1. Education and Expertise: I have undergone extensive education and training, understanding anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and the principles of exercise science. This knowledge allows me to create personalized and safe fitness plans tailored to your individual needs.

  2. Safety and Injury Prevention: Proper technique is crucial in preventing injuries. I am trained to ensure you perform exercises correctly, reducing the risk of harm. Influencers, on the other hand, might not emphasize proper form, leading to potential injuries.

  3. Individualized Programs: Everyone's body is different. I can assess your unique physical condition, taking into account any limitations or medical history, and design a program that suits you. Influencers often promote generic routines that may not be suitable for everyone.

  4. Accountability and Support: I provide ongoing support and accountability, tracking your progress, making necessary adjustments, and motivating you to reach your goals. Influencers can't offer this level of personalized attention.

  5. Ethics and Professionalism: I adhere to a code of ethics, ensuring I provide the best possible care and advice. Influencers, motivated by sponsorships and brand deals, may prioritize their own gains over your well-being.

The Danger of Misinformation

Fitness influencers can spread misinformation, either unknowingly or intentionally, for the sake of popularity. Here are a few common issues:

  • Unrealistic Expectations: Influencers often present a curated version of their lives, setting unrealistic standards. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy and frustration when you don't achieve the same results.

  • Quick Fixes and Fads: Many promote quick fixes, fad diets, or extreme workouts that aren't sustainable or healthy in the long run.

  • Lack of Personalization: Generic advice fails to address individual needs and can be ineffective or harmful.

Making the Right Choice

When seeking a fitness guide, prioritize credentials over clout. Here are a few reasons to choose me:

  1. Check Qualifications: I hold certifications from reputable organizations (e.g., AFAA, TIWL, SITA) and have loads of continuing education in a related field, ensuring my expertise.

  2. Read Reviews: Look at testimonials from my real clients to gauge my effectiveness and professionalism. You can find many of these on my website MyJAMM.

  3. Ask Questions: I am always open to discussing my training, experience, and approach to fitness. On my website, you can learn more about my background and philosophy.

  4. Prioritize Communication: I explain my methods clearly and am open to discussing your concerns and intentions. Visit MyJAMM to see how I communicate and connect with my community.

Why I Stand Out

  1. Trauma-Informed Practice: My coaching approach is trauma-informed, focusing on helping individuals heal their relationship with movement and create body trust. This is especially important for those who have faced weight bias and fatphobia.

  2. Community Focus: My services are open to everyone, with a special focus on underrepresented groups such as the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, differently abled individuals, people of color, the fat community, and older adults. I strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for all.

  3. Holistic Approach: Beyond just physical fitness, I consider mental and emotional well-being. Having lived with ADHD, depressive disorder, anxiety, and recovered from an eating disorder, I understand the multifaceted nature of health and wellness.

  4. Joyful Movement: I believe in the joy that comes from moving your body. My goal is to help you discover this joy and celebrate your individuality through fitness.

  5. Adaptive Techniques: I specialize in functional strength conditioning and adaptive techniques that ensure everyone, regardless of their physical condition, can benefit from and enjoy movement.

Conclusion

Your health and well-being deserve the attention of a qualified professional. While fitness influencers may offer inspiration, I provide the expertise, safety, and personalized approach necessary for a successful and sustainable fitness journey. Choose wisely and invest in a coach who prioritizes your health over online popularity. Let's move joyfully and inclusively, honoring the strength and resilience within us all.
