Embracing Movement: Why I Chose to Call it Movement Instead of Exercise

When it comes to staying physically fit, most people tend to associate it with exercise. However, the word "exercise" has been used so much that it has developed a certain negative connotation. For many people, exercise feels like a chore - something they have to do rather than something they want to do. This is why I decided to call it "movement" instead of exercise. As a movement coach, my approach is very different from traditional exercise routines. In this blog post, I will explain why I chose to embrace the idea of "movement" instead of "exercise" and how it can change the way we approach our physical wellbeing.

The first reason why I chose to call it "movement" is that it is a much gentler word. Exercise often has a competitive connotation, where people feel pressured to push themselves to their limits. This has made the entire experience of exercising feel stressful and unenjoyable for many. Movement, on the other hand, is a more natural and organic way of engaging in physical activity. It promotes moving your body in a way that feels good, rather than forcing yourself to follow a rigid routine.

As a movement coach, I believe in teaching body and mind connections. Our bodies are capable of so much more than what we think they are. By becoming more conscious of our movements, we can learn to trust our bodies more. This, in turn, can lead to a sense of wellbeing and improved self-esteem. Movement isn't just about physical wellbeing, it's also about nurturing our mental health.

Another aspect of movement that sets it apart from exercise is that there is no room for diet talk or weight loss. Joyful movement is all about celebrating what our bodies can do, rather than punishing ourselves for what they can't do. By focusing on the joy of movement, we can create a positive relationship with our bodies, which can lead to a healthier lifestyle overall. When we feel good about our bodies, we are more likely to make choices that support our physical wellbeing.

When it comes to movement, there are no set rules. You don't have to follow a certain routine or push yourself to your limits. Instead, you can move in a way that feels good to you. This opens up the possibilities for physical activity and allows you to explore new ways of moving your body. As a movement coach, I encourage my clients to explore different types of movement, from dancing to walking, to find what works best for them.

Conclusion: In conclusion, when it comes to physical activity, it's time to embrace the power of movement. By choosing to move our bodies in a way that feels good, we can improve our physical and mental wellbeing. The pressure to exercise has made many people dread physical activity, but movement is different. It's gentle, flexible, and enjoyable. It's time to shift our focus toward what our bodies can do, rather than what they look like or what they can't do. Together, let's embrace movement and all the joy it can bring!
